2nd Grade Carnivorous Plant Field Trip

Ms. Crawley's 2nd grade class has been helping Eastover Science grow Venus Fly Traps, Pitcher Plants, and other carnivorous plants that will be ready to plant outside in the spring. To help further their interest, Eastover Science is taking the entire 2nd grade on a field trip to see UNCC's large selection of carnivorous plants. There is collection carnivorous plants found in the southeast, but they also have several exotic species found in other parts of the world. The students will get a chance to tour the greenhouse and gardens. One section of the greenhouse has a dinosaur surrounded by plants that were common during the Jurassic Period. The field trip is planned for May 8th.

Rex-Ms. Casseus' Water Turtle

Ms. Casseus has expanded the "Eastover Classroom Zoo" to include a Red Eared Slider. The 5th grade students named him Rex, and the students frequently take him home for the weekend. Rex is native to North Carolina, and he eats crickets and fish. The students take him home in a portable aquarium.

Solar System Presentation by Discovery Place

Discovery Place brought their IPP to Eastover last week on 3/1 for the entire 3rd grade. IPP stands for Inflatable Portable Planetary. I have to admit that it was pretty cool to crawl inside a planetary in the gym. Galaxies, constellations, space travel, and many other topics about outer space were discussed.

The Garden's first harvest

3rd graders helped cut the first crop from Eastover's garden. We delivered 4 pounds of lettuce, 2 pounds swiss chard, and 3 pounds of spinach to Friendship Trays on Friday Oct. 26th. They were very excited about our contribution and invited the school to join with the delivery during the next drop-off. That means we will get to take the students to Friendship Trays to drop off the vegetables, and then they will hand us meals to deliver to the elderly in the Cherry neighborhood which is next to our school. Everyone should visit Friendship Trays to see one of Charlotte's great charity organizations.

Eastover Garden Sign

We know have a beautiful sign for the garden. Thanks to Eastover's talented art teacher, Mr. Clifford.

Bee Hive Presentation

Eastover Science had its first Bee Hive presentation a couple of weeks ago. Chris Folk, who is one of our parent volunteers, brought a live hive to the kindergarten classrooms. He gave a wonderful explanation of how bees make honey, and he then unveiled a glass enclosed hive with hundreds of busy bees. The kids promised to let bees live when encountered outdoors.
